The Lord of Truth (Almighty and glorious is He) loves you
not because He has any need of you,
but as mercy to you,
so He loves you for your sake,
not for His own.
He loves your obedience to Him
because the benefit from it accrues to you.
You must give your attention and interest to
anyone who loves you for your sake,
and avoid anyone who loves you for his own.
- Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani
FROM: The Sublime Revelation. Translated from the Arabic by Muhtar Holland.
O son, thank God, I'd avoided all the foolish men who wanted to love me for their own sake. Men who were always asking 'What is in it for me?' Don't be surprise, there are men who would do anything to exact vengeance for failing to win a person's love. To these half-man cowards I say: 'I leave my affairs to Al-Muntaqim', while I rejoice in true Love. Love that liberates the soul and not imprison it. The awliya are inheritors of this true Love, so I love them, truly! When you love, O son, be a gentleman and love like an areef.
