The book will feature over 100 Islamic scholars' discourses from this blog, including my review of specially selected books on Sufism. Here is an excerpt of my synopsis of the book by Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><b>The Garden of Truth</b></div><div><br /></div><div><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Seyyed Hossein Nasr chose the book's title, befitting the Islamic symbolism of the Garden as paradise, in conformity to a similar symbol in the Quran. Fifty years of studying and involvement in Sufism has spurred him to write this book, dedicating it to seekers of the Truth. In doing so, he consciously moves away from academic jargon, preferring contemporary language instead.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">In the book's first part, he begins by provoking readers to the big fundamental questions of 'Who am I?' and what it means to be human. The answers to these questions, he claims, are available in Sufism. "Sufism addresses the few who yearn for an answer on the deepest level to the question of who they are, and in a manner that would touch and transform their whole being. The Sufi Path is the means within the Islamic tradition of finding the ultimate answer to this basic question and discovering our real identity." Indeed, Muslims need not wander too far for clues because Prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever knows his self knows his Lord."</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Moreover, for Muslims, knowledge of the Divine (knowing my Lord) predates his earthly existence. As stated in the Quran, verse 17:172, we, the Children of Adam, admitted: 'Yes! We do testify!' to the question: "Am I not your Lord"?</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">However, as we travel on life's journey, we tend to forget this covenant, forgetting who we are in the big scheme of things. We forget our reason for existence as God's servant. Seyyed Hossein states, "Our ego must realize its full servanthood, which the Sufis call</span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> ubbudiyyah</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">, before the Lord, and we must realize that as servants, we can never become the Lord." </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">While we are nothing more than servants, Sufism offers its own doctrine to the question, 'What does it mean to be human?' Seyyed Hossein cites two authorities in this field who were among the earliest known to have defined and explained in detail the characteristics of </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">al-insan al-kamil</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> or the Universal or Perfect Man. They are Ibn' Arabi and Abdul Karim al-Jili. The most notable example of the Universal Man is the prophets and the great saints. They are like a mirror before God, "reflecting all His Names and Qualities…"</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">But what about us? "Most of us are daydreaming in our ordinary lives simply because we have forgotten who we are." Therefore, we should all wake up to the reality of who we truly are and wake up sooner rather than later because Prophet Muhammad said, 'Man is asleep, and when he dies, he awakens.' Sufism has the answer, "Sufism is meant for those who want to wake up, who accept dying to the ego here and now, to discover the Self of all selves and to be consumed in the process, in the fire of Divine Love."</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">In Part 2 of his book, Seyyed Hossein talks about "the knowledge that illuminates and delivers from the bondage of ignorance", particularly on the significance of attaining gnosis, that is, knowing God by God, through Sufi doctrine known as "theoretical gnosis" (</span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">al-tasawwuf al-ilmi</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">). However, the author asserts that while this may serve as a map, a seeker or traveller can only realize the Truth through spiritual practice. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Seyyed Hossein then describes the Divine Essence, or </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">al-Dhat</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> in Arabic, as being beyond definition, just as Ipseity is to Christian theology. The Islamic term for God - Allah, denotes the Almighty as the indescribable Divine Essence and the manifestable Divine Names and Qualities or Attributes (as in the </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Asmaul Husna</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">, the 99 Divine Names of Allah). Regarding Sufi science, the Divine Reality can only be understood if one can discern the often misconstrued aspect of Sufism, namely </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">wahdatul wujud</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> or 'transcendent oneness or unity of being'. While this can only be fully understood through spiritual experience, a seeker should at least consider its theoretical explanations about the hierarchy of reality, starting from Non-Being or Beyond-Being, a metaphysical concept which, according to Seyyed Hossein, is also known as "</span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">sunyata </em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">(or the Void) in Buddhism and the supreme Tao which cannot be named in Far Eastern doctrines." He then explains the concept of Muhammadan Reality (</span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">al-haqiqa al-Muhammadiyah</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">), the inner reality of the Prophet, identified as the "Word or Logos </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">in divinis</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">" at the second level of the universal hierarchy of reality. Christianity has a similar understanding. It states that "it was by the Word (that is, the Logos) that all things were made and Christ was the Logos." This often-misunderstood aspect of Sufism, especially in the later years of Islam, has its roots in the works of Shams al-Din Fanari, Ibn Turkah Isfahani and Sadr al-Din Shirazi. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">The author emphasizes the need to supplement this theoretical knowledge, or rather its realization, with the virtues of love and beauty. The Truth, the object of one's journey, cannot be known without loving it and that "love leads finally to the embrace of God who in turn loves those among His servants who love Him." However, one must be able to discern between love "as emotion" and its metaphysical importance. Regarding beauty, the path to the Garden of Truth cannot be traversed except by one who beautifies their soul with the capacity of beholding God's Beauty, for that is unquestionably the aim of their yearning.</span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Having identified knowledge and love as "the two main gates to the Garden of Truth", Seyyed Hossein then introduces the reader to the practical aspect of the journey, the actions. If I may equate it to the spoke of a wheel made of knowledge and love combined, human actions could either steer the soul toward or away from the Truth because our actions can either be good or evil. This affects our ability to love and know God, which affects our souls. While we control our actions as our intelligence and free will drive them, Seyyed Hossein opines that detachment from the fruit of one's actions is necessary because that is the correct spiritual attitude. Furthermore, a seeker's actions must evince sincerity, chivalry, and courtesy. </span><em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Taqwa</em><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">, or "reverential fear of God', which the author defines as a combination of detachment, purity of action and mindfulness, is also a condition required for seekers of the Truth. </span></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">***</p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><br /></p><p style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Drop me a line if you wish to pre-order 'Boost Your Faith', authored by yours truly. The English translation below is by Al-Faqir to document Habib Umar's words in English for the benefit of our English-speaking readers, <i>bi-iznillah</i>. It is done based on a recording of the<i> majlis</i> on the Nabawi TV Youtube channel dated 25th May 2023.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Habib Umar began his speech by praising the Almighty for His great gift and the vastness of His bounties. This book [<i>Kitab Mahiyatu At-Tasawuf</i>] discusses the realities of <i>tasawwuf</i> and the signs of those who practice it. The book enlists terminologies on <i>tasawwuf</i> from the 2nd or 3rd Hijri based on available books and <i>sunnah</i> [at the time]. Since the discussion of <i>tasawwuf </i>relates to the <i>aqidah</i> of one who guards oneself or <i>muraqabah</i> [attentiveness] towards Allah, thus it pertains to noble character/behaviour, the author therefore, begins the book with the recited verses.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The verse recited in Arabic reads: Allah the Creator of Heaven and the Earth is All-Knowing of all His creations. Allah is well aware of the attributes of the heart, thus Allah says in the verse, Allah knows all that your heart and soul contains, therefore you should be wary.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The book continues with the proclamation of <i>shahadah</i> and the verse about Allah being present with His servants. As per the words of Allah in the Quran, no speech is uttered in secrecy among three people, except that He is the fourth, amongst them, and so on and so forth. Regardless of the number of people in a conversation, He is with them no matter where they are. Allah will reveal their conversations in the Hereafter, verily He knows all. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The book continues with the witnessing of the Prophet Muhammad, as a testimony of certitude towards the messages that Allah had given to all former prophets and Rasul. Prophet Muhammad was sent to acknowledge the previous messages and as a seal of the Prophets. It is Allah's prerogative to manifest the Prophet as he was, despite the will of the disbelievers (<i>mushrik</i>). Allah then speaks His words to His Rasul on the characters of the Prophet. As stated in one verse of the Quran, "O prophet, we have sent you as a messenger of glad tidings, a warner and one who calls people to Allah by His will and you are a source of light. Convey to the believers of a great bounty from Allah. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Any and all praiseworthy attributes can be found in Prophet Muhammad's [pbuh]. And Allah made an oath to mention so in the Quran. As stated in <i>Surah Al-Qalam</i>, Allah says: "Nun, consider the Pen and all they write therewith, indeed he (the Prophet) is of a great moral character." </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The <i>tasawwuf </i>scholars defined the term <i>tasawwuf </i>as <i>akhlak</i> (character). He who improves his character is said to have also increased his <i>tasawwuf</i>. Allah says in the Quran of His gifts for the believers, a prophet among them, whose role is to read the words of Allah, purify their hearts and souls, and teach them from the books and teach them wisdom, though they were clearly misguided. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">'<i>Wayuzzikihim</i>' as mentioned in the book, means to purify the heart and soul and is meant to emphasize the significance and realities of <i>tasawwuf</i>. The reality of <i>tasawwuf</i> is of those who purify their hearts and souls, hence they are the people of <i>tasawwuf</i>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">As stated in another verse of the Quran about a Prophet among you, who is displeased by any burdens that may befall you, one who is eager to help save you, and one who is empathetic towards the believers. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Salutations to the Prophet! By making salutations to the prophet one could thereby purify one's heart and soul. One who earnestly makes salutations to the Prophet will be purified by Allah, and Allah would facilitate him/her to get closer to the Prophet and Himself. As said one companion, I will occupy all of my time to make salutation to you O Prophet. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The book summarizes the essentials of <i>tasawwuf</i> so that it would be easier for you to benefit from it. The terminologies offered in the book describe the components of <i>tasawwuf </i>and also its virtues. The definitions of <i>tasawwuf</i> terminologies provided in the book include many other definitions of the subject. [audio lost].</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The people of <i>Tasawwuf </i>are those who truly embody their relationships with Allah through <i>Ihsan, Islam</i> and <i>Iman</i>. As such, the person will be perfectly guided in his moral character and exhibit the right behaviours hence attracting love from Allah for him/her. Those who wholeheartedly display the attributes and moral character until it becomes his/her reality. By having the correct understanding of <i>tasawwuf </i>and by manifesting the qualities of <i>tasawwuf,</i> his/her behaviours will appear noble and he/she will become praiseworthy. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The second definition of <i>tasawwuf </i>is to widen one's certainty of knowledge (<i>ilm yaqin</i>) to include <i>ainul yaqin</i> (certainty of witnessing) and to understand its realities. The meaning of <i>ilmu yaqin </i>is one whose heart is resolved to do good deeds. This is the beginning of <i>tasawwuf</i>. When one progresses from <i>ilmu yaqin</i> to <i>ainul yaqin</i> he/she begins to see the invisible as a manifested truth. <i>Ainul yaqin</i> is reserved for those elect who are worthy in the eyes of Allah. When one is steadfast on the level of <i>ainul yaqin</i>, he/she will then progress to <i>haqqul yaqin</i>. This lofty level is typically granted to the prophets (<i>anbiya</i>) and those among the <i>siddiqin</i> and <i>awliya</i>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The analogy between the three, <i>ilmu yaqin</i>, <i>ainul yaqin</i> and <i>haqqul yaqin</i> is such that someone informs you of a glass of water. If the informer is one whom I do not trust then I will not have ilmu yaqin on the information that he/she has conveyed to me. I will doubt it. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If the informer is honest and trustworthy, I therefore have a reason to believe the informer and as such I will have obtained ilmu yaqin. If I were to be given the same information from more trustworthy sources, I would have greater certainty on the matter. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">If the informer had also made a sound by knocking on the glass and I heard it. This would heighten my certitude in<i> ilmu yaqin</i>. There are many levels of certainty in <i>ilmu yaqin</i>. The same analogy applies to the messages that Allah has sent us about Islam and <i>iman</i> (belief) in the hereafter, in Allah and His Rasul and all that is listed in the six pillars of faith (<i>Rukun Iman</i>). The level of our iman or certainty of knowledge on these matters varies among us. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">If I were to enter the room where there is a glass of water and I see it with my own eyes, this would make my certainty stronger, that of <i>ainul yaqin</i>. As I get closer to the glass, the degree of my <i>ainul yaqin</i> increases. Likewise, if I could get to the glass to hold it and see its contents. Many <i>awliya</i> among the<i> ummah</i> is at this level of <i>ainul yaqin</i>. And the elect among the <i>awliya</i> is even higher in their level of certainty at <i>haqqul yaqin</i> - those who hold the glass and taste the water. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">As said Imam Abdullah al-Haddad in his poetry: acquaint yourself with the Quran and follow the <i>sunnah</i> of the Prophet and the <i>salaf</i>, the <i>ahlul yaqin</i> - people of certitude those who are at <i>ainul yaqin</i> and <i>haqqul yaqin</i>, those who arrive at the reality of their relationship or knowledge (<i>makrifah</i>) of Allah. The taste of such certainty is the sweetest of drinks for us. Therefore, drink it, for it is beyond your imagination. May Allah let us savour the drink of certainty, elevate us in <i>ilmu yaqin</i>, and onward to <i>ainul yaqin</i> and bless us with Your generosity so that we shall all arrive at <i>haqqul yaqin</i>. There is nothing more sacred regarding certitude than one that descends from heaven to the earth. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">O Allah, we are gathered here with all who are present here, we raise our hands to You O Lord so that You grant us your mercy (<i>redha</i>) and grant us <i>ilmu yaqin, ainul yaqin</i> and <i>haqqul yaqin.</i> And perfect Your gift to us so that we will be among the people of haqqul yaqin. We gather here solely for Your sake. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The third definition of <i>tasawwuf</i> is one's effort to progress the path of Islam and <i>iman</i> to get closer to Allah and attain gnosis (<i>makrifah</i>) of Allah and to seek His love for His sake. Imam Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah bin Faqih said about the physical manifestation of Islam, <i>iman</i>, <i>Ihsan </i>and <i>makrifah.</i> That these definitions of <i>tasawwuf </i>complement one another. And the definitions may be concluded with one that is most complete which is to perfectly follow the <i>sunnah </i>of Rasulallah. The "fruit" of following the Prophet, is the love of Allah, as stated in the Quran: "If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you..." Know that all good lies in following the Prophet who grants intercession.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Now that we understand the definition of <i>tasawwuf</i>, who are they? Who are the people of <i>tasawwuf</i>? Who are the Sufis? The Sufis are those who have reached the fruit of their good deeds, the fruit of their noble characters for they have in reality exemplified the characters as commanded by Allah, they have won the love and mercy of Allah, and they are the Sufis.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">One cannot be called a Sufi unless he/she has reached the level of <i>ainul yaqin</i>, he/she is a <i>mutasawwif,</i> that one aspires to become a Sufi. A group of people who are confused about <i>tasawwuf</i> or Sufi asked Shaykh Muhammad Abduh Yameni if he was a Sufi, and he replied, "If only I was a Sufi. I am not one. I love them."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Those who lack understanding of <i>tasawwuf </i>or Sufi could cause confusion and mislead others. The steps to attain the level of a Sufi have already been clarified in the hadith of the Prophet relating to the concept of<i> Ihsan</i>, that one should worship Allah as if one sees Him, and if you do not see Him, know that He sees you. As for those who love the Sufis and strive in following their footsteps, but have yet to reach the level of <i>ainul yaqin</i>, they are the <i>mutasawwif</i>, they are the Sufi aspirants. And those who love the Sufis but whose efforts are somewhat lacking, are neither Sufis nor <i>mutasawwif</i>, they merely adore the Sufis. This matter is related to a hadith about one who mirrors a people, for they are regarded as among those whom they try to emulate. This hadith tells us the significance of trying to imitate or emulate someone. One who tries to imitate someone has a chance of belonging with those he/she is trying to imitate.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Imam Abdullah bin Abu Bakar Al Idrus, an <i>arif</i>, expounds on the realities of Sufi. Imam Abdullah Al-Haddad acknowledged the lofty position of the former for his ability to foretell an event. Imam Abdullah defined a Sufi as one who is on the path towards Allah. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The third group is those who try to emulate those who adore the Sufis but are not as steadfast, they are known as "<i>mutashabbihul mutashabbih</i>." A hadith that is relevant to this situation states that one who loves a group of people is considered among those he/she loves. In another hadith, the prophet is asked about one who loves a group of people but whose deeds are not equal to theirs, the Prophet replied: one will be gathered with those whom he/she loves.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">These are the signs of the people of <i>tasawwuf</i>: they understood the contents of the Quran and Sunnah. This is the fundamental of <i>tasawwuf</i>. One cannot possibly perform any good deeds properly without having a fair understanding of the<i> kitab</i> and <i>sunnah</i>. This is related to the definition of <i>tasawwuf</i> as given at the beginning of this session. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">One will find numerous people of <i>tasawwuf</i> and those who love them, in the <i>sanad</i> of <i>qiraat</i> knowledge, <i>tafsir</i>, and even hadith. Imam Malik's Al-Muwwata also has Sufis in its chain of transmission. Similarly, Kitab Musnad by Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim including those by Imam An-Nawawi and all the classic references on <i>fiqh</i> by Imam Shafie, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">It suffices to conclude that the people of <i>Tasawwuf</i> who expounds on Islam and all its branches of knowledge, they are the protector of the religion. Imam Junaid ibn Muhammad, the leader of the people of <i>Tasawwuf</i> of Baghdad said, "Those who do not memorize the Quran or write the hadith cannot be followed for our knowledge is based on the Quran and Sunnah. That our knowledge has its basis in the hadith. I will not easily fall on claims or dreams unless it is in line with the Quran and sunnah."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Verily, one who claims to be <i>kashaf </i>or performs miracles that is against the<i> kitab </i>and <i>sunnah</i> is a liar. Those who believe such a person is ignorant. As narrated in a hadith, if Allah wants a person to be good, He will grant him/her an understanding of the religion. And certainly, Allah will not appoint a wali among those who are ignorant. Imam Abdullah bin Abu Bakar Al-Idrus said I see very few people on the path of <i>haqiqat</i> so many ignorants tend to make false claims. It is impossible for one who lacks knowledge and good deeds to arrive at <i>haqiqat</i>. Only one out of 70,000 people can attain such a level. That shows how difficult it is to achieve it. Imam Abdul Rahman As-Saggaf and his grandfather Abu Bakar Adni are said to have perfect certitude and <i>Shariat</i>. According to Imam Abdul Rahman As-Saggaf, any knowledge that is devoid of <i>amal</i> is considered null and void. Any knowledge and <i>amal</i> that is absent of a <i>niyyat</i> are worthless. Any knowledge, amal or <i>niyyat</i> that is not following the Sunnah is not accepted. Any, knowledge, <i>amal</i>, <i>niyyat</i> and <i>sunnah</i> that lacks piety (<i>waraq</i>) might result in a great loss and humiliation on the Day of Reckoning. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So, all that has been described is the summary of the path to Allah. When Habib Ahmad bin Zain Al-Habshi asked his guide, Imam Al-Haddad about the meaning of the realities of <i>Tariqat Tasawwuf</i>, he said it consists of five: knowledge, good deeds, fear of Allah, sincerity, and piety. And that is one of many attributes of the people of <i>Tasawwuf</i>. May Allah grant us such an attribute.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Imam Abdul Rahman As-Saggaf emphasized the importance of keeping a close connection with the Quran and reading it consistently so that he/she can complete the Quran once in the morning and once in the evening and increase the frequency to two, three, and four <i>khatam</i>. These are the people of the Quran. They are very close to Allah. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">They are the guided ones. They are contented with the gifts of Allah. They have no other intentions except Allah. They keep close company with the Quran. May Allah bless us with their blessings. May Allah guide us on account of their holiness. Let us die in their path while we are safe from <i>fitnah</i>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">May Allah protect the <i>ummah</i> from both seen and unseen <i>fitnah</i>. Grant those who are present at this majlis <i>ilmu yaqin</i> and <i>haqqul yaqin</i>. Grant us an understanding of the religion. That we may follow the Prophet Al-Amin. Let us not leave this gathering unless You have granted Your mercy and <i>maqbul</i>. Keep us guided under all circumstances. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div>***</div><div><br /></div><div>[May I be forgiven for any errors or ommissions]</div><div><br /></div><div>Ref: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1bD0VvV3X0">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1bD0VvV3X0</a></div>E. But in creating man and inserting roh into Adam the physical, the "ego" [essence] of Allah is inserted into man inadvertently. All other religions do not have the concept of Allah the Ahad (Buddhism, no god: Hinduism multiple gods, Christianity paganistic misguidedness of man the god reincarnate) so in mysticism, those who study them in this region are also misguided into believing he can assimilate with Allah now in the moment. Thus many embraced syirikism almost unknowingly (Tuhan Harun, which we all know too well from the press). Thus syirik khafi is all too prevalent in this region as well as mainstream Islam. Syirik Khafi defined as the black ant on a black stone in the darkest moonless night. One has only to indulge into the yoga (the joining of man and god) aphorisms of Patanjali to fully comprehend and intimately be knowledgeable in such matters.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Knowledge and imagination as expounded and taught to Adam through his mental faculties are all divine aspirations. This is still true to this day and to eternity for in an instant all can be removed with God’s discretion and prerogative. Also at death all knowledge and experiences are removed because the body has ceased to function and the brain stops functioning. Teaching the roh after death is almost impossible and is a long and arduous task. Since time is also the function of the brain, time becomes superlative."</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">.. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Hah! I managed to khatam the Quran on 19th Ramadhan. When I texted my Quran coach, he remarked "you have exceeded the KPI" lol.</div><div><br /></div><div>Alhamdulillah we managed to perform Qiyamulail at the mosque on most nights.</div><div><br /></div><div>Alhamdulillah for the lovely experiences donning purdah/niqab on ALL my visits to the mosque. It was fun dressing up as smartly as I could for each visit. </div><div><br /></div><div>Alhamdulillah to have made many new masjid-friends.</div><div><br /></div><div>Guys, we have to be detail in counting our blessings.</div><div><br /></div><div>Alhamdulillah, I feel my heart becoming more attached to the mosque and the Quran even post-Ramadhan. And that I look forward to visiting the mosque wearing purdah/niqab once a week. I take it as a practice towards a plausible future.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I learned from listening to both online and in-person tausiyah that we are supposed to continue praying so that Allah accepts our ibadah in Ramadhan for as long as six months after.</div><div><br /></div><div>Indeed, may the Lord be pleased with our efforts.</div><div>Aamiin.</div><div><br /></div><div>WaSalamualaikum warahmatullah,</div><div>E.Ismail</div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAVa_SWzE11-gFN4zSEXw0D5OmJsPO7QxAOcgju-AH5z0Mb1EnxQYin3M_XJGRz2nQZ3f73N_cxRY2XdXVM00h7PTEIm-ZcQ2XZvcKrwupqzSFXJ67gCXPEtv_MEECqKUPemnnBj2hNmoFHS44YYqa1Q1gBv0WreYC527mlVIAgbLFOhjnL8rNEVcN/s2617/20220525_220546.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2617" data-original-width="2394" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAVa_SWzE11-gFN4zSEXw0D5OmJsPO7QxAOcgju-AH5z0Mb1EnxQYin3M_XJGRz2nQZ3f73N_cxRY2XdXVM00h7PTEIm-ZcQ2XZvcKrwupqzSFXJ67gCXPEtv_MEECqKUPemnnBj2hNmoFHS44YYqa1Q1gBv0WreYC527mlVIAgbLFOhjnL8rNEVcN/w183-h200/20220525_220546.jpg" width="183" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">25th May 2022</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div><div>Throwback pix of me practising my ideal future</div><div>image bi-iznillah.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtArxw2--XyjmYNmdQw4N9n3QwOBwb50sGuco0HDQPsdaOWk1eoUBkl42JBB7Fm9Pe_Ve8pq5A9GvjNztq3el83AH5fjuKgwl2nXfNIMK9fzjFcF6HoojTlniRNBTs-YSkp2yIuTPZS0YiYLwHmveMu76ETmiAIMvcuV-7Fs5cNSC1ugCiZYR-zLgd/s2312/20220413_211003.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2312" data-original-width="1608" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtArxw2--XyjmYNmdQw4N9n3QwOBwb50sGuco0HDQPsdaOWk1eoUBkl42JBB7Fm9Pe_Ve8pq5A9GvjNztq3el83AH5fjuKgwl2nXfNIMK9fzjFcF6HoojTlniRNBTs-YSkp2yIuTPZS0YiYLwHmveMu76ETmiAIMvcuV-7Fs5cNSC1ugCiZYR-zLgd/w139-h200/20220413_211003.jpg" width="139" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzGS4VaVywgo-wDLig7aFhR7RpYM0TXWbkmfqg96iCHhlL0BP5sOPGsHGQoj2N4x2OrzNpUwK7HypTSaQpdnlc4hTlDikUkYnao9khC1vkOjfQqNG_28CfSbolp95UeYmt4IcBQdk7T9umo64AbFjmSZw9blLJqcjiOgoOoiWRSYc2d5TZSAG-v-rO/s2020/20220418_202822.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2020" data-original-width="1833" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzGS4VaVywgo-wDLig7aFhR7RpYM0TXWbkmfqg96iCHhlL0BP5sOPGsHGQoj2N4x2OrzNpUwK7HypTSaQpdnlc4hTlDikUkYnao9khC1vkOjfQqNG_28CfSbolp95UeYmt4IcBQdk7T9umo64AbFjmSZw9blLJqcjiOgoOoiWRSYc2d5TZSAG-v-rO/w181-h200/20220418_202822.jpg" width="181" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAWwWY5jamih8L49NyZ0HL88ifli9oIkfsxg1cfndTb0q6g1JTq23fbY-4uPsWT1H-BDZ7_VDAlSdDzrmyF78xeFAXq2sOkq5q1dceVMiZb5sTqVVBO6kpjlKu5WdNysd8-ukAH-ANr-n147cE-G-1aZYdgANXyY0kpdmDbPleilN53iIIpMFG2Ey/s2736/20220425_180444.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="2736" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMAWwWY5jamih8L49NyZ0HL88ifli9oIkfsxg1cfndTb0q6g1JTq23fbY-4uPsWT1H-BDZ7_VDAlSdDzrmyF78xeFAXq2sOkq5q1dceVMiZb5sTqVVBO6kpjlKu5WdNysd8-ukAH-ANr-n147cE-G-1aZYdgANXyY0kpdmDbPleilN53iIIpMFG2Ey/w200-h200/20220425_180444.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>E. May Allah grant Habib Umar a long healthy life and allow us to continue benefitting from all his good counsel. As Habib Umar said in one of his many talks that I'd listened to, we need not be near him, all we have to have is a strong heart connection with him and a strong <i>himmah</i> to want to practise all the recommended <i>azkar</i> that he would consistently share in Rejab, Syaaban and Ramadan each year. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">They say a true leader is one who can motivate you to act. I'll also say from my experiences as a struggling<i> salik</i>, Habib Umar bin Hafiz has been the one who has a strong capacity to direct the heart towards Rasulallah <i>salallah alaihi wasalam</i> and thereby encourage the tongue to make many <i>selawat</i>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">For someone at my age who's travelled the path that has been destined for me, the so-called worldly accomplishments that I may have accomplished and those that I see people accomplished, I am of the opinion that the only one true wealth (achievement) that matters is a person's ability to keep a consistently good connection with the Prophet <i>salallah alaihi wasalam</i> through <i>selawat</i>. That's it. Its wonderful vibe is becoming apparent. I have just listened to a<i> tausiyah</i> streamed live from Majelis Rasulullah FB. Ustaz Ahmad Afif Abdullah (pic) began by sharing the remarks made by the venerable Habib Umar bin Hafiz pertaining to the arrival of Rejab.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Habib Umar elucidated the oft-quoted saying about Rejab being a month for sowing [the seeds of one's <i>ibadah</i>], Syaaban a month for watering the seeds and Ramadan a time to reap the fruits that one has sowed. So what do these analogies mean? To live Rejab means to repent truthfully, that is to aim for <i>hakikat taubah </i>(ultimate repentance), that is to admit one's mistakes, to have a strong resolve in not repeating them and to show remorse for one's misconducts, and to refrain from committing <i>makruh</i> deeds, let alone the <i>haram</i> (forbidden). </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In Syaaban, one waters one's good seeds by nurturing the longing one has for Allah and Rasulullah, longing for the rewards that Allah normally would grant to the <i>solehin. </i>To water the seeds with plenty of affection and <i>selawat</i> for Rasulullah. When making <i>selawat</i> for the Prophet <i>salallah alaihi wasalam</i>, be conscious of the quality. Sit facing the <i>qibla </i>and establish a heart connection with the Prophet. Just recite a few <i>selawat</i> but with high quality, by invoking one's longing and love for Rasulullah. If you can do more while maintaining the quality, then that would be better. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">In Ramadan, one may anticipate three bounties from the Lord, on account of the seeds that one sowed in Rejab and nourished during Syaaban: that is obtaining His mercy, earning His pardon and getting protection from the torments of hellfire. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Therefore, sow the good seeds in Rejab. If you do not sow, how can you expect to enjoy the fruits in Ramadan? If you don't water the seeds well in Syaaban, they won't grow and you'll have nothing special to look forward to in Ramadan.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /><i>Allahumma bariklana fi Rajaba wa Syaaban</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>wa ballighna Ramadan</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">***</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Allahu a'lam.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I encourage those who understand the Indonesian language to listen to the <i>tausiyah</i> here:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/MajelisRasulullahSAWOfficial/videos/675630500543957">https://www.facebook.com/MajelisRasulullahSAWOfficial/videos/675630500543957</a></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjgyKnUYc1qoZ5zNYJujEij4DQ7SzA0DXAll_9fa6Vby10CxV0EwrElDrYDGmED4-aluTfJvOcMH5vTb8DMRVm-BE3F7Ut85SauCdloMYS54COxI7p_-VdaRnUvewODi2tN3RccDPXWuWywGYGNGnMCfvZ_pvcFt82VL6rjV8pHETArdx9W2v6UrNgl=w320-h181" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ustaz Ahmad Afif on Majelis Rasulullah FB<br />3rd Feb 2022</td></tr></tbody></table> </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On a personal note, I am just grateful that my family had recently hosted yet another gathering with our Huffaz friends. He was one <i>ulama</i> and <i>murabbi</i> of Penang who was loved and adored beyond the shores of this little island. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">I had the privilege to interview him at Masjid Kapitan in 2007. The interview was subsequently published in a local magazine. Plenty of facts on Shaykh's background was shared in the article. I will look for it and update this posting later In Sha Allah.</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><i>Alhamdullilah wa shukrulillah</i>, for the opportunity to visit him again in May 2015. This occasion was briefly mentioned here: <a href="https://lisanaldin.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-kernels.html">The Kernels</a></p><p style="text-align: justify;">During the visit, Shaykh Abdullah was kind to allow us to record his words of advice which is still relevant to this day, certainly. He spoke about the importance of continually polishing one's spiritual state and encouraged us to pray for our family and friends during their absence. It goes without saying that our tongues often engage in sinful talks, but the Shaykh emphasized on "a tongue that is void of sins" that is one who secretly makes <i>du'a</i> for her/his family and friends. </p><p style="text-align: justify;">I am grateful and humbled to have had the opportunity to pay my last respect to the Shaykh at his burial at Maqam Nordin, within the compound of Masjid Kapitan, yesterday. May Allah witness the love that all who were present had for him and allow us to reunite with him in the best of realms - <i>Jannatul Firdaus</i>. Aamin ya Rabbal Alamin. </p><div>I humbly invite you to recite <i>Surah Al-Fatihah</i> for Allahyarham Shaykh Abdullah Al-Bukhari.</div><div>Thank you.</div><div>..</div><div><br /></div><div>[For the record the Shaykh's full name is Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman. He's well known as Ustaz Abdullah Bukhari, short for Al-Bukhari because of his profound knowledge on hadith.]</div><div> </div>

Allah Kareem! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The graduation ceremony was held at the beautiful Barony Hall on the Strathclyde University campus in Glasgow. A very sad morning indeed.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I'll be honest. The passing of any <i>mu'aleem/Habaib/Shuyukh</i> saddens us, for sure but I'd never cried so hard as I did today. I pray the tears will serve as proof of my respect and love for one extremely learned and loving man as Shaykh Fahmi Zamzam. Coincidently, his last lesson as shared on his FB is about respect for learned men, one's guru. He said, in Malay: '<i>Tidak sampai orang yang sampai kecuali dengan menghormati gurunya</i>.' </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">'<i>Sampai'</i> (arrive) is an old Malay term that is commonly used among<i> salik</i>, meaning to obtain the knowledge that one seeks, its usefulness and its blessings. It means one has attained success in esoteric terms due to the respect one offers to the guru.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I felt funny as I was reciting the holy verses. I thought, what am I doing? The shaykh does not need it. He is way up there. He is a beloved soul. Even in his passing, he taught me something. The recitation is for me, the <i>hasanah </i>is for me even though it's dedicated to him. I am the <i>faqir</i>. He has most definitely read the Quran a whole lot more than I can ever match. He is meeting the Lord with plenty of credits. <i>Subhanallah.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So I said in my <i>doa</i> so that Allah pardon any mistakes in my recital. My deeds are full of flaws. How can I offer something worthy for an honourable person like Shaykh Fahmi?! It's simply a humble gesture of respect and love that I have for him, no more than that. You know love is subjective. The matter of the heart is <i>latif </i>(subtle), you feel what you feel. You feel a bit more strongly to some souls than to others. Only God knows why.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I can only thank God for the beautiful and memorable experiences of being in his <i>majalis</i>. The fatherly tone of his voice, interspersed at times with laughter, the clarity of his message...and of course it was lovely to see him at his peak, so to speak, about nine years ago 2009 to 2013, he was in his early 50s. If you listen to his recent talks, you'll know what I mean, it's obvious that he had been giving way too many lessons than he should. But Allah knows best. And certainly, as we all know, the <i>shuyukh</i> are all tireless and selfless. <i>MaShaAllah</i>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Now, what about us? We fall every now and then, we need a frequent refresher of the advice and wisdom he has left us with. We need to keep our hearts connected with the <i>ruhul qudus</i>, the <i>muqarabeen </i>those who still grace this land and those who have passed on.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Wama taufiqi illa billah.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">*** </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Bismillah.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Links to Shaykh Fahmi's lessons from 2009 - 2013 that I managed to capture by the grace of Allah. Those years, there were not many YouTube channels or FB pages that published such lessons. So we must be grateful and take advantage of the abundant resources and access that we now have.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a Me in the mood for rambling after having cruised the coastal road at Batu Feringghi, Penang for the umpteenth time, joyfully.</div><div><br /></div><div>One impressive 18 year old of this decade has got to be Emma Raducanu (pic left). I had been wondering what I have in common with this remarkable 2021 US Open Champion, and more importantly what attitude I wish I had when I was 18 - to believe in oneself, to not get ahead of oneself that is to focus on the present ONLY, that's really Zen in action seen in such an amazing young girl.</div><div><br /></div><div>At 18, one should be more willing to engage with as many people as possible, to listen to them and exchange a decent conversation. You will never know she/he might/might not be crossing your path again. </div><div><br /></div><div>At 18, it's about exploring your talents at the fullest, maximizing your rocket-fueled energy.</div><div><br /></div><div>At 18, it's about being comfortable in your own skin, and not worry about fitting in.</div><div><br /></div><div>At 18, be your sweetest self so that when you are 50 you can look back and relive the sweetness once again so you know your soul is ageless.</div><div><br /></div><div>At 18, be your most competitive so you would build a reservoir of drive, vigor, hunger and thirst in forging ahead towards the best version of you. This dam will be crucial as you age because you will need to come back to it to draw the elixir of life over and over again.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJwsmLXLa1F-GZT6bKwm4FUXAFjF2SXjsTqjUTwLAXVCzPRBBMWar8B22ctv-hzbZbw5kTeMfodKbXWFmcqQwVc8ZeNlFV5C16zfaKGpd4pG-LztKNEZQ9DXEwGYcqLKKR7m9lol6NTk0/s2048/20210923_095030.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="2048" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJwsmLXLa1F-GZT6bKwm4FUXAFjF2SXjsTqjUTwLAXVCzPRBBMWar8B22ctv-hzbZbw5kTeMfodKbXWFmcqQwVc8ZeNlFV5C16zfaKGpd4pG-LztKNEZQ9DXEwGYcqLKKR7m9lol6NTk0/w200-h200/20210923_095030.jpg" title="Emma & Ezza at 18" width="200" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Emma & Ezza at 18<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div><div>Most importantly, enjoy!</div><div><br /></div><div>- E -</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>E. I have been awarded an MBA with Distinction! The official results were released two days before my birthday. <i>MaShaAllah!</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The sweetest jaw-dropping part was when I saw the high score I got for my final project. Super grateful that I managed to pull through at the last minute and completed it in 3 solid months. I swear it was all due to the wonderful souls who made <i>du'a </i>for my success especially those select few from whom I had pleaded for their special <i>du'a. </i>God bless them all.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ok...I don't know what else to write LOL. It's a beautiful night, I am listening to Boyce Avenue singing Whitney's "I will always love you". LOL. Sorry, that's so random. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But it's just a normal night really, doing some homework assigned by a professional speech coach that I've just hired and thinking what story to craft for the 'Study UK Alumni Award' upon invitation from my other UK alma mater - Stirling. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I think Scotland loves me, woo-hooo! LOL.</div><div><br /></div><div>OK when too many LOLs appear, it's time to sign off. [What la wei!]</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On a serious note, I hope my small success will inspire the young ones to work hard and always give a bit more than their best in anything they do. Nice to see visitor numbers increasing despite my long absence. I pray seekers of guidance will find something useful here. Hopefully, people will eventually recognize that this <i>faqir</i> tries her best to usher people towards good habits and soul-building lessons.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I am delighted to announce one Lordly bounty the generous Al-Kareem and Al-Wahab has bestowed on me. That I had successfully completed my MBA final project! Alhamdulillah for this important milestone. Alhamdulillah that my dissertation had won praises from my supervisor who is also co-editor at an international journal. YaHuuuu!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">But the blogger in me has been somewhat impatient to write about the religious aspect of my dissertation topic because not surprisingly there are many similarities, rather principles from the <i>deen</i> that are reflected in the so-called professional field known as Futures Literacy, and its many subsets e.g. foresight and scenario planning. You might have noticed it - future with an S, the future is plural, we are talking about futures not just the one general idea of a distant future. Futures Literacy is an essential competency of the 21st century, says UNESCO. If you think about it, Muslim children are taught about <i>tauhid</i>, specifically the Six Articles of Faith (<i>Rukun Iman</i>) very early in life, and that is an element of Futures Literacy i.e. belief in the Hereafter. The <i>akhirah</i> offers a myriad of possibilities. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are at least two types of future, Heaven or Hell and if you wish to dive deeper, there are seven levels of Heaven and several levels of Hell too. One undesirable future and God-forbid is the lowest pit of Hell reserved for the <i>munafiqun</i>, so that is one future scenario that we should avoid at all cost. </div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We learn from the Quran and <i>hadith</i> either directly or indirectly through the scholars, that there are many futures. In the language of the Futurists, you could do a backcasting, that is identify the things you got to do to increase your chances of going to heaven or things to avoid if you want to reduce your chances of ending up in hell. Yes, as simple as that, but not so easy because as we all know, the path to Heaven requires lots of hard work - externally and more so internal work. Notwithstanding the fact that Allah has the ultimate say, regardless of the efforts that we put in because as you all know, His <i>redha</i> (mercy) is the sole key to eternal felicity vis-Ă -vis <i>Jannah</i>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Professional Futurists propagate horizon scanning and scenario planning towards achieving one's desirable future. There are four types of futures within the vast future net called 'potential future'. There are possible, plausible, probable and preferable futures. So think about it, think beyond the potential, not just for worldly professional matters but also spiritually. Of course, if you wish to know more about it professionally, you could hire me for consultancy, LOL. But here on this space, matters related to the <i>deen</i>, it is free counsel, take it or leave it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ahh...yes I can imagine what's going on in the minds of the haters and stalkers. But I wish to thank them for their generosities, seriously. For believers, we are fortunate because we gain from both the well-wishers and those who harbor bad <i>'ain</i> towards us.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I must register my gratitude towards the beautiful souls who have been praying and rooting for me because I would not have done it so successfully if God had not answered their prayers for my success. May Allah reward them with His special bounties.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I also wish to remind the loyal genuine visitors of this blog to keep moving forward, keep developing your mental and spiritual capabilities. <i>Fastabiqul khairat</i> applies not just outwardly but also to one's mental model. After all, without proper knowledge, worship has little value. Some of the seasoned visitors to this blog may recall a <i>tausiyah </i>by the venerable Shaykh Al Yaqoubi who elucidated the real meaning of 'to worship Allah' as 'to know Allah', so then ponder why the first Quran word revealed was <i>iqra'</i> (read).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Let us continue to read as much as possible, the Quran and all other useful reading materials and also read His wondrous signs on the horizons and within ourselves.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLJvTqiLP0B_5kVGrU39TAVsxd5r6p_LK6UgUdgXdZVnhgI-L9ju7978DxXHj3tyi7wogvM4fadwSCjnkrebwqmmzgSAnebHFGEgtaQ5wRZfqjo59ROLfgF6YSuaQRbD7EALelmugnwKU/s2048/20210827_073420.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="2048" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLJvTqiLP0B_5kVGrU39TAVsxd5r6p_LK6UgUdgXdZVnhgI-L9ju7978DxXHj3tyi7wogvM4fadwSCjnkrebwqmmzgSAnebHFGEgtaQ5wRZfqjo59ROLfgF6YSuaQRbD7EALelmugnwKU/s320/20210827_073420.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Rabbi zidni ilma war zuqni fahma</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Rabbana atmim lana nuurana waq firlana </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>innaka 'ala kulli syai in qodir</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i> </i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Until next time, stay safe wherever you are.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">- E. By the way, I hope those who intended to recite 7000 selawat, the specific selawat as recommended by Habib Umar bin Hafiz for Shaaban, have managed to complete the task.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I am grateful for the simple pleasures of life like being able to complete the said task in time for Nisfu Shaaban and being a top fan of Masjid An-Nur's FB page, Alhamdulillah. You should be happy that I am a top fan there LOL, else I would not have come across this precious du'a and record it here for our benefit bi-iznillah. Well, this is for those who have not heard of it before or those who are yet to memorize it. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ustaz Hafiz (pic below) related some heartwarming stories of the special relationship between Prophet Muhammad salallah alaihi wasalam and Abdullah ibn Abbas. As he did so, he recalled a du'a which the Prophet salallah alaihi wasalam would customarily recite during i'tidal and after solah. It is a very good du'a to strengthen one's aqidah, as it makes one reaffirms the supreme might of Allah against any makhluk who may appear powerful or threatening in the eyes of man. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So I checked, this could be traced to a hadith recorded by Al Bukhari and Muslim.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div><i>Allahumma laa maani'a</i></div><div><i>lima a'thoita</i></div><div><i>wala mu'tia</i></div><div><i>lima mana'ta</i></div><div><i>wala yan fa'uu</i></div><div><i>zal jaddi</i></div><div><i>minkal jadd</i></div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVNU4JAMW0EiyO4xYUB5_L9w9mEh355_S5N1EVU6pF2vz0Uoot57sreBNBVBTtMDBIQSNaSbnN5LL_2PQh21yfSsPtgWUv6WUSzGw-Z2Bx_q4NNKFnW3l5aivrH3dfgxemjPem5fMlUT4/s1080/Screenshot_20210424-021416_Chrome.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="536" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVNU4JAMW0EiyO4xYUB5_L9w9mEh355_S5N1EVU6pF2vz0Uoot57sreBNBVBTtMDBIQSNaSbnN5LL_2PQh21yfSsPtgWUv6WUSzGw-Z2Bx_q4NNKFnW3l5aivrH3dfgxemjPem5fMlUT4/s320/Screenshot_20210424-021416_Chrome.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Screenshot credit:<br />https://bimbinganislam.com/dzikir-setelah-shalat/</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><div><br /></div><div>The English translation, as shared on sunnah.com is as follows:</div><div><br /></div><div>"O Allah there is none</div><div>who can withhold</div><div>what You give</div><div>and none may give what You have withheld</div><div>and the might of the mighty person</div><div>cannot benefit him</div><div>against You."</div><div> </div><div>***</div><div><br /></div><div>Let's put it to practice.</div><div>La quwwata illah billah.</div><div>Allahumma bal lighna Ramadhan.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFk1TmgJmyBIM1BbKzGiyNW6EJ6OUvkgi2wg6_OfOFgXlmpPkQjhfAatRNNY5GWKXIWXXPNaTGbODMQ0AyWKLJ5uh6qUNV7HTbVzC3HlUbjtuIR63vvMB4nQJ1XOGmo5zb8NrOMoqsIm4/s858/Imam+Hafiz+MATG+26+Feb+2021.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="507" data-original-width="858" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFk1TmgJmyBIM1BbKzGiyNW6EJ6OUvkgi2wg6_OfOFgXlmpPkQjhfAatRNNY5GWKXIWXXPNaTGbODMQ0AyWKLJ5uh6qUNV7HTbVzC3HlUbjtuIR63vvMB4nQJ1XOGmo5zb8NrOMoqsIm4/s320/Imam+Hafiz+MATG+26+Feb+2021.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ustaz Hafiz on Masjid An Nur Temasya Glenmarie online session dated 26th Feb.<br />I'd like to encourage the Malay speaking visitors to this blog to peruse the mosque's FB and check out his tausiyah.</td></tr></tbody></table><a href="goog_2016421871"><br /></a><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Reference:</div><div><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/masjidannurglenmarie">https://www.facebook.com/masjidannurglenmarie</a></span></div><div><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><a href="https://sunnah.com/search?q=%D9%84%D8%A7+%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B9+%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A7">https://sunnah.com/search</a></span></div><div><br /></div>E. YaHuu!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We are to recite the recommended <i>selawat </i>7000 times or more.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I have done a thousand so far, Alhamdulillah.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Take note that even if one seems <i>riya'</i> (showing-off) about his/her<i> selawat</i>, it still counts, so I learned somewhere. But do not take my word for it cos no one should believe anything found on the internet lol unless the source is a credible scholar like Habib Umar. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There's a lot of truth about the <i>riya'</i> bit. One cannot help but feel excited about sending salutations to the Prophet<i> salallah alaihi wasalam</i> because it is simply pure joy. It has nothing to do with a third party because it is a direct channel between you and the Prophet <i>sallallah alaihi wasalam</i>. Amazing eh? But of course, as they say, <i>Man lam yadzuq lam yadri.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i><br /></i></div><div style="text-align: justify;">You might also notice in several of the <i>selawat</i> which Habib Umar had recommended in the past, including the one for the recent Rajab<i>, </i>there is a recurring theme on asking Allah to remove sadness from the heart - <i>wa az hib huzna qalbi.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">May Allah continue to guide us and make it easy for us to act upon any recommended <i>azkar </i>or deeds that could bring us closer to Him and His beloved Rasul <i>salallah alaihi wasalam</i>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Let's (spiritually) fly to Madina and let our hearts be forever free of sadness.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aaamin.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div> </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji163ZHx6gjEMxyeOjpnUd_S6l3sXEijudJi-of4eopqL5I8Ga1cDJm5_PuX31rTuOyJOb5h7vy97wsevfoBRAVU-e29p4JRHuU6MN5YGAS0w4nwH9BCjSC2csLKth2h63Klgds4O-vqI/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="1440" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji163ZHx6gjEMxyeOjpnUd_S6l3sXEijudJi-of4eopqL5I8Ga1cDJm5_PuX31rTuOyJOb5h7vy97wsevfoBRAVU-e29p4JRHuU6MN5YGAS0w4nwH9BCjSC2csLKth2h63Klgds4O-vqI/w400-h226/image.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div><div><i><b>Allahumma salli wa sallim 'ala Sayidina Muhammad </b></i></div><div><i><b>wa 'ala aali Sayidina Muhammad </b></i><i><b>wa sohbihi </b></i></div><div><i><b>wa 'ala nabiyika Hud</b></i></div><div><i><b>wa lakal hamdu fil uula wal aakhirah</b></i></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">[all praise belongs to You in this life and the next]</span></div><div><i><b>waghfirlana fil aakhirati wal uula</b></i></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">[forgive us in the next life and in this life]</span></div><div><i><b>wa az hib huzna qulubina</b></i></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">[and remove all sadness from our hearts]</span></div><div><i><b>fid dunya wal aakhirah</b></i></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">[in this world and the hereafter]</span></div><div><br /></div><div>***</div><div><br /></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;">Source:</span></div><div><span style="font-size: x-small;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Muwasala/photos/a.760176044011815/4370725362956847/">https://www.facebook.com/Muwasala/photos/a.760176044011815/4370725362956847/</a></span></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>E.
