Humility | On walking and night-time

Bismillah.

This is my takeaway from a chapter on humility written by Habib Umar bin Hafiz. The book is called 'The Clarification of Noble Character'.

That humility, although an internal state, it is visible in the way we walk and our willingness to sacrifice the night for worship. Allah describes humility in Surah Furqan as belonging to those who walk on the earth with humility and those who spend the night in worship of their Lord prostrating and standing.

Most of us generally feel we are humble beings or at least we are humble enough according to some vague ideas we have pertaining to humility. It is not for us to describe ourselves as having humility. However, we can evaluate ourselves based on two simple factors - the way we walk on earth and the number of nights in a year we stay up to stand and prostrate to the Lord. Allah has made the yardstick pretty clear.

How do you walk with humility? According to Habib Ali Zaenal Abidin, walk like an Ibadurrahman, with haunan,  that is calm with tawadduk. Here's an old posting for reference on how to fashion one's stride.

May Allah grant us the gift of tawfiq to consistently enliven the lonely nights with worship.
May Allah regard us among those who are humble.
Ameen.
