19th century Naqshbandi Sufi leader of Penang
Bismillah.
Sheikh Omar Basheer al-Khalidi (d. 1881) had achieved something few religious leaders could achieve. A migrant from the blessed region of Hadhramaut, Yemen, Sheikh Omar had brought to Penang not only his personal religious discipline but leadership charisma that appealed to the British government who was ruling Penang then. He was very well known as a Naqshbandi Sufi Shaykh who introduced the special tariqah practice called suluk. He was also very well known among the ruling elites who were indebted to him for his ability to mediate during the Penang riots of 1867.
The house depicted in the painting below was used for suluk where Naqshbandi tariqah followers would live in for an extended period of time and dedicate their time doing zikr under the guidance of Sheikh Omar. According to his grandson, Haji Fathil bin Sheikh Zakaria Basheer, members of Kedah royal family were among those who used to frequent the 'Suluk House'. Sheikh Omar was from the Khalidiah branch of Naqshbandi which until today emphasizes on seclusion. He thus carried the title al-Khalidi.
I thought Sheikh Omar was special because he did not seem to be apologetic nor was he secretive about his involvement in tariqah. In fact, he did not allow his personal religious inclinations to hinder him from taking part in public affairs.
The description accompanying Sheikh Omar's portrait above noted that the secretary to Captain Francis Light (British founder of Penang) had in 1860 built a house for Sheikh Omar where he lived until his death in 1881. It was also recorded in the annals that Sheikh Omar had lived at No. 69 Lebuh Acheh, at the heart of a Muslim center for hajj, trade and Islamic studies. Upon Sheikh Omar's demise, his son, Sheikh Zakaria took over the role of Penang's most notable religious leader. Sheikh Zakaria was appointed as Penang's first mufti and later, another son of Sheikh Omar (Sheikh Yahya) followed suit and became Penang's first qadi. They both operated from the same address. Eventually, in 1917, No. 69 Lebuh Acheh evolved into a madrasah for Qur'anic studies.
Sheikh Omar's tomb is located in Kampung Melayu, Ayer Hitam, Penang, underneath a 35-foot white tower (picture). Built by Muslim labourers from India, it is regarded as the largest and most handsome Muslim mausoleum in Penang. It is regularly visited by Naqshbandi followers as well as non-tariqah public from near and far places such as Pakistan and Lebanon.

I felt honoured for the opportunity to visit Sheikh Omar's tomb again today. Alhamdulillah wa shukrulillah. Know that we belong with those who adore and cherish awliya Allah and we pray to Allah s.w.t so that we too would be istiqamah in our zikr; so that we follow in their footsteps in becoming close to our Creator and useful to the ummah. Ameen Allahumma Ameen.

p/s Did I tell you that I grew up in Kampung Melayu, Ayer Hitam, Penang - a humble neighbourhood blessed by such a holy presence. I recalled the nights when I stayed up to study, I would take a break on the balcony of my family's flat on the 9th floor. Every time, I mean every time I stood there, my eyes somehow always landed on the dome of the mausoleum. In the stillness of the night, the dome looked mysteriously majestic yet intensely serene. I know in my heart that I would not be the person I am today without the barakah from Sheikh Omar Basheer al-Khalidi. Al-Fatihah.

ReplyDeleteHello, does anyone know if Sheikh Omar Basheer al-Khalidi had any daughters, and who was his wife? In addition, I am wanting to find out how Tengku Rughaya/Roghaya is related to this family, if at all.
ReplyDeleteMy apologies, I had inquired previously about a Tengku Rugayah and if there was any relation to the Sheikh Omar Basheer family. That was an error. I meant to ask about a Siti Rogayah.
ReplyDeleteSalam dear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI am very sorry I do not have the information you required. I was hoping that some of the visitors who happened to be Sheikh Omar's relatives would be able to assist you. Let's wait some more ok see if someone would respond to you.
I will ask around the next time I visit his tomb and the neighborhood. InshaAllah. But it's not going to be soon.
Thanks.
Ezza
Salam Ezza,
ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to respond to my inquiry. I shall await a response and check back regularly.
In the meantime, if anyone does have any information in regards to Siti Rugayah (I believe she was married to Tengku Uwok Ibrahim of the Asahan Regency), please feel free to contact me at violettanoor@aol.com

Salam Violetta Noor,
ReplyDeleteSheikh Omar Basheer's wife was Hajjah Salha Yaakub, they had one daughter; Hajjah Asiah Basheer ( Married to Hj Ibrahim). One of his sons; Hj Natt Basheer was married to one Siti Rogayah Ansari, though I'm not sure if she's the one you meant.
Salam,
Haidar Zofrain Mohd Daud
Salam Haidar Zofrain,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the information, it was quite informative.
According to my sources, I was told that Sheikh Omar Basheer had two daughter's, one was Siti Rugayah, who was married to Tengku Uwok Ibrahim of the Asahan Sultanate.
It could possibly be that the information given to me was an error and that there is no relation between the Sheikh Omar Basheer family and the Siti Rugayah that I am inquiring about.
My research shall continue - my question is, did Sheikh Omar Basheer have any sisters or relatives named Siti Rugayah, or perhaps his wife, Hajjah Salha Yaakub?
If anyone does have any information, I would be very appreciative!
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Violetta Noor

Salam Violetta Noor,
ReplyDeleteFrom what I know, Sheikh Omar Basheer was born in Penang but he grew up in Arab (maybe Yemen, where he's originally from and underwent religious training in Mecca), only upon adult hood did he return to Tanah Melayu, but before that he visited Indonesia (again I can't remember where exactly, maybe Acheh) and he got married there. But his entire family died from plague. Then only did he return to Penang and remarried there to Hajjah Salha Yaakub.
I am not sure whether Sheikh Omar Basheer had any siblings or not as it was not stated in the family tree, and alas our family tree is not comprehensive, information and names are collected from here and there, mostly from word of mouth.
Salam,
Haidar Zofrain Mohd Daud
Salam Haidar Zofrain,
ReplyDeleteI am most thankful for the additional information that you have provided me in regards to your family tree.
I absolutely understand that the absence of written documentation and having to gather data through oral history can definitely be limited at times.
Should I find any further information pertinent to Siti Rogayah and in relation to your family, I will most definitely share it on this site.
Regards,
Violetta Noor
Assalamu Alaikum,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Zakaria Basheer bin Ahmad Basheer bin Mohamed Basheer (mamak adek) bin Sya’ayah Basheer (Hj Putih) bin Sheikh Omar Basheer Al-Khaleedy. I was born at 69 Acheen Street, Penang, in January 1967.
According to information I obtained from my father, my uncles and Khoo Salma Nasution (an established Penang Historian who are dearly close with my late granduncle Almarhum Dato’ Sheikh Fatthil Basheer bin Sheikh Zachariah Basheer bin Sheik Omar Basheer Al-Khaleedy), there are two versions at least of the origin of Almarhum Sheikh Omar Basheer’s connection to Penang.
One version said that he was born in Penang to Hadramaut (Yamen) immigrant parents who were staying somewhere around the Masjid Kapitan Keling enclave, but was sent to Makkah (together with his sister) by his father to study when he was young. From Makkah he went to India to further his studies on the Tariqat Nasyabandiah under a Nasyabandiah scholar there. And according to Almarhum Dato Sheikh Fatthil Basheer the title Al-Khaleedy was used by him since then, at the end of his name in order to honor the Nasyabandiah tariqat scholar who had taught him. After the completion his study in India, he was invited by an Acheh Sultan to teach Islam in Acheh. He was then married to an Achehnese lady from an aristocratic family and they were blessed with several children. But during an epic cholera epidemic in Acheh, he lost his entire family.
At the same time, Tengku Syed Hussain Aidid (the founder of Kampung Mesjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh, in Penang) invited him to come back to Penang to help him managed an Islamic enclave the he had established by then around Lebuh Acheh (Acheen Street), Lumut Lane and part of Armenian Street and making the mosque of Acheen Street as its focal point for Islamic administrative center. Almarhum Sheikh Omar Basheer was then appointed as a Mufti (the first mufti in Penang) and was given an authority by the British to deploy Islamic Hudud Law in the newly established Tanjung Malay Islamic enclave there.
He was located at 69 Lebuh Acheh (within the Lebuh Acheh mosque compound) where he built a house and started to raise a new family there (some version said that the house 69 Lebuh Acheh already existed when he came and was given to him by Tengku Syed Hussain Idid).
The other version said that he was born in Hadhramaut and was sent to Makkah when he was young and later went to India and then to Acheh before he came to Penang on Tengku Syed Hussain Idid’s invitation. Wallahualam.
I’d be happy to bring anyone interested on a historical tour at Lebuh Acheh. Some family members are still living in 69 Acheen Street and the house has been designated a living heritage by the Ministry of Heritage.
Wassalam.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this blog and share your family history.
And thank you for offering a tour of Lebuh Aceh. It would be wonderful to meet and hear from you in person. It's been almost 3 years since I last prayed at Masjid Lebuh Acheh and visited the maqam of Tengku Syed Hussain Idid. I will be in touch with you when I 'balik kampung' next time InshAllah.
